European Union concerned over WMD proliferation

It is working out strategies to counter global terrorism

CHENNAI: The Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to India, Bhutan, and Nepal, Francisco da Camara Gomes, said the European Union (EU) was deeply concerned about the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Speaking on ‘Political and Economic Dynamics of the 27-member States of Europe with specific reference to EU-India relationship,’ Mr. Gomes said the EU was working not only on sharing of information on global threats but also working out strategies to counter international terrorism.

Mr. Gomes was delivering a public lecture on India-EU relations, organised by the Centre for Security Analysis (CSA), Chennai.

Sri Lankan issue

On the current deadlock on the peace process in Sri Lanka, Mr. Gomes said that the EU still had an open mind and strongly believed only through negotiations and peace dialogues could a lasting solution be found to the ethnic strife in the island nation.

Free Trade Agreement

Referring to the possible Free Trade Agreement with India, Mr. Gomes was confident that the proposed meeting in Brussels on June 27 would throw more light on how soon the FTA would be put in place.

Ms. Shashi Tripathi, Member, Union Public Service Commission and former Secretary (West) Union Ministry of External Affairs, who spoke on “Expansion of the European Union and its implications for India,” said the implications by and large had been largely beneficial for India.

She traced the growth of the trade relationship in view of the India-EU relationship.

Security issues

CSA President Lt.Gen. V.R. Raghavan said the CSA was strongly concerned about issues relating to security, especially in the peninsular India.
